People are often asked this question but rarely have an answer. Sometimes it takes a bit of soul searching and this usually happens at a crisis point in their lives.
Example of a Crisis Point
While I may be a healthy weight now, I was always an overweight person. Certainly not obese! My big wake up came one day as I was listening to a talk on the radio about diabetes and the optimal waist measurement. I measured myself and realised I was way over. Having nursed overweight patients and watched as people lost parts of their lower limbs due to poor circulation, I knew I had to do something. Well as a life member of weight watchers, I went back to start again. However this time it didn’t have the same magic. The program had changed and I decided this wasn’t for me. So I went to Jenny Craig and after awhile I found the meals boring. I tried the shakes and found some OK however there was something missing. At times I did lose weight but then once I stopped I put it back on again.
Nutrition Training
As trainee nurses’ part of our training was a solid block on Nutrition. Living in PNG especially on Bougainville where P&O were the caterers for miners, the food was superb. However there was a down side. As nursing Superintendent of the local hospital, we worked as a team of medical people looking at ways we could assist people effectively to live more healthy lifestyles. There were 3 distinct groups of people
Group 1. The miners – who were overweight with high cholesterol
Group 2. The town people- this was a mixed group although many of them were overweight and eating the western diet. They also had a high cholesterol although not as high as group 1.
Group 3. These were the village people who ate fresh and home grown food. Their cholesterol was normal.
I introduced a similar program to WW for people so they could participate in learning healthy eating and lose weight. It was a very successful program and much benefit was gained from it. The doctors were very supportive of the program.
Making a Commitment
The problem with any program is people not committing to it long term. They are successful for a time and then drop out.
I heard about a very successful program in Melbourne so decided to investigate. I flew to Melbourne to not only get help for myself with hypnosis, I bought the program back and have been using it with clients ever since – with great success, and loving it.
I must confess I do break out every now and then and eat the wrong food. I am not a huge drinker so when I do have a drink, my resolve is weakened and that is when I may eat the sweets etc.
Thankfully, I love being in control and can get back on track.
